In our last session on student engagement, we talked about engaging learners with activities. Not just activities but ones that can inspire, challenge and open a channel of curiosity to boost the learners' thinking skills.

Before we delve into the active learning activities, let us re-visit our perception of who our students are or should be.

As business persons, we know who customers are and who partners are too. With customer's perception, we view relationships basically from the money perspective-consumer, buyer, and shopper. Once the exchange of good and services are received, we are done. Everything is to support sales and boost services. Though most business persons go the extra mile to identify, satisfy and retain their customers. The interest is largely in boosting sales and services. Yes, no doubt value is added but to a limited level.

From the partnership perspective, the relationship with learners is different. We view it from the investment and ownership angle. To teachers, educators and educational institutions, learners are not just customers but important members of the educational system. In fact, they are the primary reason school is created. They should intentionally be involved in the learning process and carefully handled. My question is, do we see our learners; as customers or partners in learning?

Learners should be seen as partners in learning rather than customers. This is because as partners, they will operate on a wider horizon of who they are and what they can do without limitation. As partners, they feel a sense of ownership and can challenge the status quo by deeper thinking, positive contribution and problem-solving. With a learning partnership mindset, learners are ready to engage

I encourage teachers, educators and the school system to see our learners through the lens of a learning partnership, not customers.  This is because proper student engagement begins with who our students are to us.

They are beyond 'Customers'.Come let us add more meaning to our student engagement.

Can learners drive learning? Find out !!

Quick Tip 👎

Last week we talked about quitting the driver's seat to allow the learners to drive the learning vehicle. This week we want to discuss 'how'.
This is simply done with learners' engagement popularly known as(students' engagement).

Plutarch once said and I quote:

"Spark their minds with activities and not content. Give them responsibilities to handle. Allow them time to read and think significantly. Remember "The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled."

I believe that this quote is for learners. Engaging learners requires activities and intentional responsibilities for the learners that is to say that teachers and educators should be well prepared before meeting their students. This is because significant impact must accompany significant action(s).

Spark the learners with mind-activating questions and activities that will open up their curiosity. Do not subject their minds to an idle mode. Approach your classroom with an engaged spirit, not content. This is because our learners are neither banks nor dumping grounds. As far back as 1972, Freire spoke extensively on banking education and its consequences. I urge you to explore that.

Learners are human beings with active minds capable of meaningful constructions. Do not underestimate that.

Give them work to do, communicate the rubrics (the learning expectations and standards) to them and guide them in the process. Be the facilitator, not the doer. It is that simple. Yes.

Here is what happens when learners are actively engaged; they become builders and creators with the process. They will embrace the process of problem-solving instead of diving straight into the answer. That sounds great huh!!!!!

Allow them the opportunity to make a meaningful psychological investment in their lives. Endeavour to open up continuous learning even when you have ended your lesson. Trigger interest, motivation and passion for learning. Allow your learners to live, not just exist.

As an educator or teacher with student engagement orientation, you must endeavour to come to a classroom loaded with active learning activities that will kindle the learning process. Never come unprepared because most times unpreparedness is one of the major reasons we indulge in content delivery. Instead of taking responsibility for our actions, we rather settle for content teaching at the expense of active learning.

Teachers ! This is a must grab

Tips for authentic teaching.👇

Understanding your role as a teacher and your students as learners is paramount. It is the beginning of wisdom in the teaching profession.

Robyn .R. Jackson emphasized and I quote;

“Just as it is important to understand what your role is, it is also important to understand what it is not”

You can’t teach successfully and authentically as a teacher unless you recognize that the power to learn belongs to the students and the power to teach belongs to you.

How do you teach authentically and live successfully as a teacher without worries?

You do that in so many ways; by deploying different active teaching, learning skills and practices.

Hot  Tip 1

1.      Quit the driver’s seat and let your learners drive

This sounds tough and sometimes we ask ourselves how? Whatever, it is doable. We all know what happens in driving lessons, right.  By quitting the seat, a teacher needs to step aside and leave the stage for the learners to learn by themselves. As they drive this learning vehicle, be there as a guide, simple.

There is no doubt they will meet obstacles, potholes and gallops on the way but I promise you they will surmount. Why? Because they have the brain that can think. They are not morons but active individuals capable of meaningful constructions. By quitting the seat, it means you are giving away your power to learners. No more Superman. This will help to build trust because they now know that you believe in them.

Not only that; it will also help you to teach with ease. Give your learners time for meaningful struggle. All they just need is support, not you doing the job for them.

See, sometimes do not bother with the how, just get the why and you are good to go.
